To help you with the preparations for your upcoming studies in Hungary, we would like to share some useful information with you regarding the visa application process.

By now, all awarded scholarship holders have received their scholarship offer and we are sure you are excited about your upcoming studies in Hungary. While many of the Diaspora Scholarship Holders are exempt from the visa requirement based on their citizenship, some of you need a visa to successfully enter Hungary. In both cases, we have collected some useful information to help you with the preparation. Remember, the visa application process can take longer, so the sooner you start it, the better!

To start your visa application process, you will need to book an appointment at the respective Hungarian consulate as soon as possible. The visa process and the list of necessary documents may vary from country to country. What you will need for sure is your passport, the Letter of Acceptance that you receive from your host institution, and the Letter of Award, which will be sent to you by Tempus Public Foundation via the online application system (DreamApply). If you have been conditionally awarded, once you upload your missing documents and your host institution approves them, you will be provided with the Letter of Acceptance and the Letter of Award that you will need to submit to your visa application.

It is important to make the necessary arrangements well ahead of time because it may take up to 30 days until a visa is issued. We draw your attention to the fact that the decision on your visa application can be made only after the submission of all the necessary documents you were asked to provide by the consulate.

The visa application must be submitted to the Hungarian Consulate in the country where the permanent or temporary residence of the applicant is located or in the country of the applicant’s nationality.
For more information please consult the website of the Consular Services:          https://konzinfo.mfa.gov.hu/en
Please find the list of countries that do not need a visa to Hungary on the following link: https://konzinfo.mfa.gov.hu/en/visa-free-travel-hungary
In the case of certain countries, the exemption from the visa requirement applies only to holders of biometric passports. For further information please check the country list on the above link.

Please note that the provided list is only for information purposes. It is highly recommended to contact the Embassy of Hungary accredited to your sending country before the intended departure in order to get a confirmation. In case you arrive from a visa-free sending country, you have received a certificate from Tempus Public Foundation along with the notification on your scholarship offer, which you must keep with you when travelling to Hungary.  If you wish to travel to Hungary with your family members, please keep in mind that as stated in the Operational Regulations of the Diaspora Scholarship Programme, the scholarship contributes to the living expenses of the scholar. It does not provide visas, supplementary benefits or administrative services to the persons accompanying them or to their family members. The legal entity of the scholarship agreement shall be the scholarship holder exclusively. Further information about the scholarship and the next steps can be found in our practical guide, which you can access via the following link: https://diasporascholarship.hu/wp-content/uploads/hallgatoi_guide_dfp.pdf
