Feeling More Included in the Hungarian Community Motivates Me
After discovering her Hungarian roots as a teenager through her brother, Gabriela embarked on a journey of self-discovery. At first, Hungary was a place she knew very little about, but over time she found a community that helped her connect with the language, the culture, and her own identity. Through the scholarship programme, she built close friendships, learned to navigate life on her own, and experienced a sense of freedom that made her first months in Hungary feel almost surreal.

After moving halfway across the world from New Zealand to Budapest, an ELTE psychology student found continuity, community, and purpose through water polo. Now an active player at ELTE BEAC and a mentor for fellow international students, they reflect on sport as a lifeline, the mental challenges of studying abroad, and what it means to truly feel at home in Hungary.

Growing up in South Africa, Emese's connection to Hungary was defined by a name that sounded unusual there, a few Hungarian words, and fragments of family stories. When she began her studies in the country, she was still full of doubts, but she overcame them—and by now, alongside embracing her Hungarian identity, she has also found her professional goals.
