As you may know, the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship Programme was launched in the autumn of 2020 for those who live in a Hungarian diaspora in any country outside of the European Union, the Republic of Serbia or the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine. The scholarship aims to develop the scholarship holder’s personal, professional, and cultural relations with Hungary. Also, the scholarship supports their professional advancement with high-quality Hungarian higher education while improving their Hungarian language skills and discovering the thousand-year-old Hungarian history and culture.
How many applications were submitted?
During the application for the academic year 2023/2024, altogether 317 applicants submitted their applications, of which 200 met the basic eligibility criteria. Following the validation of the diaspora recommendation letters by the Hungarian Diplomatic Representations, a total of 120 applications were forwarded to the higher education institutions for the entrance examination. Three-quarters of them passed the examination process. In addition to completing their applications, all applicants needed a diaspora motivation letter, which was evaluated by independent experts.
What were the most popular study fields and levels?
Most of those who passed the institutional admission process were approved for undergraduate study programmes, while graduate (master and one-tier master) and non-degree programmes were also popular. The most popular study programme included Hungarian Language Preparatory Programme as well as Medicine Psychology and International Relations in English language.
From which countries were most applications submitted?
The programme is available for the members of a Hungarian diaspora living in any country outside of the European Union, the Republic of Serbia, and the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine. In 2023, submissions came from almost all over the world, but more than 50% of the eligible applicants came from the United States, Canada, and Brazil. There was a noticeable rise in the application numbers from the United Kingdom. Approved, new scholarship holders come from 22 different sending countries.
How many Hungarian host institutions participate in the scholarship programme?
In 2023/2024 application period, altogether 28 Hungarian higher education institutions offered academic programmes for scholarship holders. The most popular universities among the eligible applicants were Eötvös Loránd University, University of Pécs, Semmelweis University and Corvinus University of Budapest. Approved, new scholarship holders are admitted to 16 different host universities.
