Participation in higher education can be very expensive. The good news, however, is that the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship (HDS) takes a huge financial burden off your shoulders!
If you’ve been thinking about applying but are worried about the costs of studying, this summary is for you.
Let’s take a closer look at the provisions that allow you to focus on what really matters: studying, discovering your Hungarian heritage, and gaining new experiences.
Tuition-Free Education and Monthly Stipend
The main advantage of the HDS is that you don’t have to pay tuition fees. In addition, participants receive a monthly allowance throughout the entire scholarship period:
- 43,700 HUF (approx. 132 USD) for non-degree programs (Hungarian language preparatory and specialized postgraduate training courses), bachelor’s, master’s, and one-tier master’s programs.
- 140,000 HUF (approx. 423 USD) per month for doctoral programs during the first phase (4 semesters).
- 180,000 HUF (approx. 544 USD) per month for doctoral programs during the second phase (4 semesters).
Health Insurance
Alongside your academic performance and exploring a new country, maintaining your health is of utmost importance. To support this, the HDS provides medical services and supplementary health insurance coverage of up to 65,000 HUF per year (approx. 197 USD).
Housing Contribution or Free Dormitory Placement
Whether you’ll be living in a dormitory or renting an apartment in Hungary, accommodation can be costly. Fortunately, you’ll receive support in this key area as well! Depending on availability, your higher education institution will provide free dormitory accommodation, or if in case of renting a room or apartment, you are eligible for a monthly housing contribution of 40,000 HUF (approx. 121 USD).
Travel Support: One-Time Travel Grant and Nationwide Transport Pass
If the distance between Budapest and your permanent residence is at least 8,000 km, you are entitled to a one-time travel reimbursement of 330,000 HUF (approx. 1,000 USD) under the scholarship. Additionally, public transportation within Hungary is free for you, as the cost of your monthly nationwide travel pass can be reimbursed!
