Diaspora students brewing the diaspora beer 2025

2025-09-04
What happens when tradition meets creativity? Twelve Diaspora Scholarship holders recently came together for a hands-on beer brewing workshop—not just to explore Hungarian brewing culture and sample unique flavors, but to craft something entirely new: a signature Diaspora beer, brewed with community spirit and shared roots.

Twelve Diaspora Scholarship holders recently took part in a unique beer brewing workshop—not just to learn about the craft and taste a variety of beers, but to create something entirely new: a special diaspora beer.

These students came to Hungary through the scholarship to explore their Hungarian heritage and are currently studying at universities such as Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Óbuda University, University of Pannonia, Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE), University of Debrecen, and the University of Pécs. Some even traveled from cities as far as Pécs and Debrecen to attend the workshop—a true testament to their enthusiasm and commitment.

The event began with an introduction to the basics of beer: how color influences flavor, how brewing time affects taste, and what sets craft beer apart from mass-produced varieties. Participants then sampled a selection of Hungarian craft beers and learned how to properly evaluate their aroma, taste, and texture—just like the pros.

While their own brew was fermenting, the group took part in a lively beer-themed quiz. Do you know which country has the highest per capita beer consumption? (It’s Czechia!) Or the alcohol content of the world’s strongest beer, Snake Venom? A staggering 67.5%! And the oldest known brewery? It dates back 13,000 years.

These were just a few of the fun and surprising questions that kept the energy high. The winning team walked away with a curated selection of handcrafted Hungarian beers—cheers to that!

So, why beer brewing? Because these twelve students spent five hours crafting a one-of-a-kind batch that will be unveiled at the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship Welcome Event 2025 this October. This special brew will serve as a symbolic welcome to the new scholarship holders arriving in Hungary in the fall to begin their studies.

A beer made by diaspora students, for diaspora students—a true taste of community and connection.

Stay tuned – the big beer reveal is coming soon!
